Development Associate

Position Summary: The Development Associate will support and be responsible for supporting the individual giving program at GEMS, including implementing appeal letter campaigns, implementing online strategies, cultivating relationship with volunteers, and supporting the coordination of mission-driven cultivation and fundraising events. The Development Associate is also responsible for coordinating the production and mailing of fundraising appeals, maintaining the database, managing day-to-day administrative tasks such as submitting receipts and relevant paperwork to the finance department, running donor reports and preparing thank you letters and gift acknowledgements. This position reports to the Chief Development and Communications Officer.

Tasks and Responsibilities: This statement of duties is for purpose of identifying this position but it is not limited to:

Key Duties:

1) Support and implement strategies for solicitation that will grow annual revenue for the Individual Giving Program, including:

  • Maintain a department-wide fundraising calendar and logistical systems
  • Manage an annual appeal campaign, including renewals and upgrades and multiple smaller appeals throughout the year
  • Execution of direct mail strategies
  • Online giving initiatives
  • Develop and manage partnerships
  • Help to coordinate GEMS’ major annual fundraising event alongside the Chief Communications and Development Officer, Development Manager, Executive Director, and Board of Directors
  • Work closely with volunteers and provide support for third party fundraising events
  • Liaise with Board of Directors for individual fundraising initiatives
  • Work collaboratively with other program areas to advance individual giving goals

2 Be responsible for all database management, reporting, and maintenance

3) Process and acknowledge all philanthropic contributions to GEMS, including all In Kind Donations

4) Support the Communications and Development Department in all aspects of the department’s work (e.g. annual appeals, social media, maintaining systems, check processing, special events, etc.)

5) Help facilitate the design of GEMS’ publications and materials (the GEMS newsletter)

6) Work with fiscal team to ensure accurate record keeping

  • Process all expense reports
  • Maintain all donor records on www.salesforce.com
  • Reconcile records with fiscal department
  • Manage GEMS Shop

7) Supervise the Development Intern/Fellow as he or she supports the Communications and Development team. Including her work managing the GEMS shop and donor records on the GEMS database, and other duties as assigned

8) Support online social media networks (Facebook, Twitter, ect.)

Additional tasks include:

  • Support and coordinate fundraising volunteers
  • Work with other members of the development team to enhance, coordinate, and provide support for independent screening events
  • Other duties as assigned

Additional Qualifications:

  • 1-3 years experience working on a fundraising team, supporting overall fundraising goal of department
  • Passion for engaging individuals in supporting GEMS’ mission
  • Creative problem-solving skills
  • Ability to create systems, track progress to goals, and communicate this information regularly
  • Excellent planning, administrative, and organizational skills
  • High energy, self-managing, entrepreneurial personality
  • Proficiency with fundraising databases
  • Knowledge of individual fundraising principles and practices
  • Superior interpersonal skills
  • Some nights and weekends required
